One of the first questions people ask when they’re considering life insurance is:
“Will I need to take a medical exam?”
It’s a completely reasonable question. Most people aren’t excited about scheduling lab work, giving blood samples, or completing additional paperwork just to buy life insurance.
The good news is that with OptiMaxx Protección from Allianz follows a very straightforward process. Whether you need medical exams depends primarily on your age and the amount of life insurance coverage you want.
There is nothing arbitrary about it. Allianz has a well-defined underwriting guide that specifies exactly when medical requirements apply and which tests are required.
In this guide, we’ll explain how the process works, which medical exams may be requested, when financial documentation becomes necessary, and what all of this means if you’re considering purchasing an Allianz life insurance policy in Mexico.
How Allianz Decides Whether You Need Medical Exams
Three factors determine the underwriting requirements:
- Your age
- The amount of life insurance coverage (sum insured)
- Whether the requested coverage exceeds Allianz’s underwriting limits
Depending on these factors, your application will generally fall into one of three categories:
- No medical exam required
- Type A Medical Exam
- Type B Medical Exam
As either your age or the requested coverage amount increases, the underwriting process becomes more comprehensive.
That doesn’t mean Allianz expects something to be wrong—it simply reflects how life insurance companies evaluate risk.

Medical Requirements for Applicants Ages 18–49
This is the easiest age group to insure. Because younger applicants statistically present lower mortality risk, underwriting requirements are lighter.
Coverage up to MXN $7 Million
If you’re applying for up to MXN $7 million in life insurance coverage, no medical exams are required.
You’ll simply complete:
- The insurance application
- A health questionnaire
- A lifestyle questionnaire (including smoking status)
If everything appears normal, Allianz can issue the policy without laboratory testing or physician examinations.
Coverage Above MXN $7 Million and Up to MXN $10 Million
Once the requested coverage exceeds MXN $7 million, Allianz requires a Type A Medical Exam.
This includes:
- Medical examination
- Urinalysis
- Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Profile (Profile XII)
- HIV test (ELISA)
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Resting electrocardiogram (ECG)
These tests help evaluate:
- Liver function
- Kidney function
- Blood sugar levels
- Cholesterol
- General cardiovascular health
Many applicants actually appreciate these exams because they occasionally reveal health conditions that had gone unnoticed.
Coverage Above MXN $10 Million
For coverage amounts exceeding MXN $10 million, Allianz requires a Type B Medical Exam.
This includes everything in the Type A exam plus:
- B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP)
- High-Sensitivity Troponin I
These additional cardiac biomarkers allow Allianz to perform a more detailed evaluation of heart function and cardiovascular risk.
This is entirely standard for higher coverage amounts, where the insurer is assuming substantially greater financial risk.

Medical Requirements for Applicants Ages 50–59
Once applicants reach their fifties, the underwriting thresholds become slightly more restrictive.
Coverage up to MXN $4 Million
Applicants requesting up to MXN $4 million in coverage can still qualify without medical exams.
This allows many people in their fifties to obtain life insurance through a relatively simple underwriting process.
Coverage Above MXN $4 Million and Up to MXN $8 Million
Coverage above MXN $4 million requires the Type A Medical Exam.
The required tests remain the same, with one additional screening for men over age 50:
- Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)
This blood test helps evaluate prostate-related health concerns that become more relevant with age.
Coverage Above MXN $8 Million
Applicants requesting more than MXN $8 million must complete the Type B Medical Exam, including:
- Medical examination
- Urinalysis
- Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Profile (Profile XII)
- HIV (ELISA)
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- BNP
- High-Sensitivity Troponin I
- PSA (for male applicants)
At this level, Allianz performs a comprehensive medical evaluation before issuing the policy.

Medical Requirements for Applicants Ages 60–70
For applicants between 60 and 70 years old, the underwriting process changes again.
Medical exams are always required, regardless of the coverage amount.
Every applicant in this age group completes the Type B Medical Exam, including:
- Medical examination
- Urinalysis
- Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Profile
- HIV (ELISA)
- Complete Blood Count
- Electrocardiogram
- BNP
- High-Sensitivity Troponin I
- PSA (for men)
This doesn’t mean someone in this age range cannot qualify for life insurance. It simply means Allianz performs a full medical evaluation before deciding whether to accept the application.

What Is Included in the Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Profile (Profile XII)?
One of the most common questions applicants ask concerns the Profile XII blood test.
This laboratory panel includes:
- Glucose
- Urea
- Creatinine
- Uric acid
- Cholesterol
- Triglycerides
- Direct bilirubin
- Indirect bilirubin
- Total bilirubin
- Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT)
- Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
- Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
In simple terms, these tests evaluate:
- Liver function
- Kidney function
- Metabolic health
It’s a standard laboratory panel commonly included in routine medical checkups.

Financial Requirements for Higher Coverage Amounts
Medical underwriting isn’t the only requirement.
Once the requested life insurance coverage exceeds MXN $7 million, Allianz also requests financial documentation.
This includes:
- Financial questionnaire
- Tax returns from the previous two years
The purpose is to confirm that the requested coverage amount is financially reasonable based on the applicant’s income and financial profile.
This helps Allianz with:
- Fraud prevention
- Regulatory compliance
- Actuarial risk assessment
Large life insurance policies require insurers to verify that the requested coverage aligns with the applicant’s financial circumstances.
This is a standard underwriting practice—not a personal judgment.

A Common Misunderstanding
Some people assume that being asked to complete medical exams means something is wrong — that’s not the case.
Medical and financial requirements are simply triggered when an application exceeds certain age or coverage thresholds. This is standard practice not only at Allianz, but across much of the life insurance industry. When an insurer is being asked to provide several million pesos in coverage, it needs to perform a more thorough assessment of both the applicant’s health and financial profile before accepting the risk.
Many applications that require medical exams are ultimately approved without any issues.
But, if you’re considering a larger amount of coverage, one strategy we often recommend is to first apply for up to your bracket cap, since Allianz does not require medical exams or financial documentation at that level.
Once that policy has been approved and is in force, we can submit a request to increase the coverage to your desired amount—for example, USD $1 million.
If the increase is approved, great—you end up with the higher level of protection you wanted. If it isn’t, you would still have life insurance already in place instead of having your entire application declined and ending up with no coverage at all.
For many applicants, this approach provides additional peace of mind while still allowing them to pursue a higher level of protection.

Final Thoughts
OptiMaxx Protección is pure life insurance.
It is not an investment product, a retirement plan, or a savings account.
Its purpose is to provide financial protection for the people who depend on you if the unexpected happens.
When viewed from that perspective, medical exams aren’t an obstacle—they’re simply part of the underwriting process that allows Allianz to properly assess risk.
The real question isn’t whether you’ll need a medical exam.
The real question is whether your family would be financially protected if you were no longer there.
If the answer is no, then completing a few medical tests is a relatively small step toward securing their future.
